Google Play starts showing apps' actual download sizes
Google Play now displays the actual storage space a whole app or an upgrade will take up, so you don't accidentally download anything too big. If an update is only 2.91MB, it will show that exact figure right there in each app's detail box. That will give you the chance to reconsider your download or to free up some space before getting a particularly large game or VR experience.                   Besides displaying more accurate file sizes, Google also tweaked its Play Store algorithm to make updates even smaller. Most Android apps (98 percent of them) only download changes to their APK files when you update them, and those new files merge with the old ones. The updated algorithm will make those updates up to 50 percent smaller.   Finally, Google  improved compression algorithms will reduce big games' file sizes, which could be as huge as 2GB, by around 12 percent. Those with high-end phones might not get much out of these changes, but they could make a big difference for those who own more affordable devices with limited storage.

Here is why the Freedom 251 costs just Rs 251

The cliche that India is an extremely price conscious market seems to have been proved, yet again! With a smartphone selling at Rs 251 (nearly Rs 300 if you add in the Rs 40 shipping price included), an unknown phone company Ringing Bells has turned into the biggest news maker in the tech and business industry over the last couple of days, and how.
From specs offered at an unbelievably low price point and iPhone-like icons to being a re-branded Adcom Ikon 4 smartphone and Make in India project, a lot has already been said and written about the Freeedom 251. But what still seems baffling is how they will achieve the price point so low for a device that is well speced to be priced a little over a couple of thousands. You don’t even need to be a businessman to do the math.
Last night, Ashok Chadha, President, Ringing Bells took to answering media questions post the launch event and also explained how the company plans to achieve this low price point, and ‘still’ manage to sustain. Firstly, he cleared the air about subsidy by saying there is no government subsidy involved, but the company plans to benefit from economies of scale.

“The Indian market is at 2 crore units a month. If you take 30 percent of that, then you achieve economies of scale,” he had said. The Freedom 251 is priced around Rs 250, which means it could get them a cut of estimated Rs 500 on the Rs 2,500 bill of materials. However, selling Rs 2,500 device at Rs 251 would still incur losses in crores, and how does the company plan to tackle that. Somehow, it appears there’s more that needs to be explained.
It is believed that economies of scale coincides only with large businesses and that too only in relatively few products. For example, Boeing’s aircrafts, Microsoft’s OSes, and Intel’s CPU. However, even these global businesses are said to be dominant in only a few product lines.
“Economies of scale by itself is not enough for a business to keep a competitive advantage. If a business has only an economies of scale advantage, its competitors will be able to take some of its customers and will eventually be able to capture enough market share to remove its scale advantage. The business with the economies of scale advantage needs to be able to keep its larger market share,” points out a post on FallibleInvestor.
He has made some tall claims stating they want to capture nearly 30 percent of the smartphone market by the end of the year. The company apparently has two pilot plants in Noida and Uttarakhand, claiming a capacity of 5 lakh phones and they are looking at an investment of Rs 230-250 crores on these plants.
If some reports are to be believed then the Noida office was deserted and didn’t even have the Ringing Bells banner, instead it was named Bell. Another factor it claims is cutting down on distributors and relying only on the online medium.  “With Made in India components, we can save on the 13.8 percent,” Chadha claimed.  Also, selling online first could save the costs incurred on large distribution networks, he further claimed.
Well, we’ve seen companies like Motorola, Lenovo, YU and even Xiaomi take that route. Xiaomi sells phones starting at roughly Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 and relies on innovative marketing, is known to have made its investors worry lately.
The company also says that they will allow other companies to use their website as a selling platform. If you have visited the 251 Freedom site, I wouldn’t even have to get into details about how they could possibly manage it. Moreover, that’s a really tall claim for a company whose site crashed even before it started taking its first booking order for the Freedom 251.
Another pointer to think about is the company taking four months to deliver the products. Currently, they have 6 lakh visitors per second, and even if a few lakhs end up buying the device via online money, that’s a huge interest to earn in four months. Any reputed bank would give about 3 to 4 percent.

Moreover, the device says it’s a ‘Made in India’ project, but clearly there is no doubt now that it is the same Adcom Ikon 4 being sold on Flipkart at almost 16X times the price at Rs 4,081. Lastly, the device has not been BIS certified. In fact, it is not even listed, points out another report. So, how can we be so sure it is safe to use and adheres to the standards like radiation and so on, that are required for the Indian market. The Indian Cellular Association (ICA) is also known to have raised its concerns.
A cheap device that aims at creating a ‘Digital India’ is a novel plan, but there are still many creases to be ironed out.

Indian Railways, RailTel and Google today launched free WiFi at the Mumbai Central station, asexpected. “The Wi-Fi will be entirely free to start and the long-term goal will be making this self-sustainable to allow for expansion to more stations and places, with RailTel and other partners, in the future,” said Google.“Also, to make sure that a few people spending all day in the station downloading lots of big files don’t slow down the network for everyone, users might notice a drop in speed after their first hour on the network. Tips, Tricks and Hidden Features of Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the sixth major update for Google’s mobile OS. As a major update, Android Marshmallow brings many new features with a lot of bug fixes and changes. However, many of the features are hidden deep in the menus and behind settings that even experienced users wouldn’t tap on. If you’re using device running Android Marshmallow, the following tips and tricks will help you get the most out of it.

Google Now on Tap

Google Now on Tap is one of the best features in Android Marshmallow. It offers quick information on whatever you’re looking on your smartphone. There’s no need to close apps or copy and paste phrases anymore. Once it’s enabled, you can bring up Google Now on Tap from any app, simply by selecting text and long-pressing the ‘Home’ button. If you’re looking for this feature, go into Google Now -> Settings -> Now cards and you can enable or disable ‘Now on Tap’.

Grant App Permissions Individually

App permissions is another top features of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The new feature lets users manage each of the app permissions individually. To access app permissions, go toSettings -> Apps and tap an individual app to see its permission. Change the switch for thepermissions that you want to grant or revoke the permission. You can also view a list ofpermissions to determine whether you have granted particular apps. Just go to Settings ->Apps, then tap the overflow menu in the top right corner. Now go to Advanced App Permissions.

Play Android Marshmallow Easter Egg

Like last year’s Lollipop Easter Egg, the Marshmallow Easter egg is a Flappy Bird lookalike. This time, though, Google has added a multiplayer feature. To open it, go to Settings ->About Phone. Then tap the Android version repeatedly until you see the Marshmallow (M) icon appear in the center of the screen. Tap on the “M” logo to turn it into a Marshmallow with antenna. Then press and hold on the Marshmallow until the game screen loads.

Enable System-UI Tuner

System UI Tuner is a hidden feature in Android Marshmallow 6.0 that allows you to customize quick settings and status bar shortcuts. You can also turn on demo mode of the device with system UI tuner.
To enable the System UI Tuner, pull down the notification panel and long-press the cog at the top next to the battery indicator. Hold it down until it begins to spin and a message will pop-up saying “Congrats! System UI Tuner has been added to Settings.”

Show Battery Percentage in the Status Bar

Android Lollipop has enabled you to show the battery percentage on the status bar using a third-party app. With Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google has tweaked things a bit and no longer requires the use of a third party app to enable this hidden battery percentage. Instead, it has tucked the option inside the hidden System-UI tuner. Just tap ‘System UI Tuner’ from the main Settings page, and toggle the switch of ‘Show Embedded Battery Percentage’ to turn the feature ON.

Exclude Certain Apps from Doze mode

Doze is a new feature in Marshmallow that is designed to increase your battery life by putting your device to sleep when it has been idle for a certain amount of time. The feature is fully automated and you can’t decide when to turn it On or Off. But you can exclude certain apps from the Doze feature.
To do it, open ‘Settings’ app and select ‘Battery’. Then tap the ‘three dots’ in the top right corner and tap ‘Battery optimization’. Tap the ‘downward-pointing arrow’, then tap ‘All apps’ from the menu that appears. You can now select the apps that you don’t want optimized for Doze mode.

Disable Notification Peeking

Android Lollipop introduced a new type of notification called “heads-up notifications” or “peeking”. Instead of showing a scrolling message in the status bar, the heads-up notifications allows notifications to pop up over the top of your display
This feature is enabled by default in Android Marshmallow, but you can choose to disable the heads-up notifications on a per-app basis. Just open the ‘Settings’ and tap ‘Sound &notification’, then Tap ‘App notifications’. Tap the name of the app you no longer want to see heads-up notifications. Next, toggle ‘Allow peeking’ to OFF.

Uninstall Apps from Your Home Screen or App Drawer

Android 6.0 Marshmallow allows you to uninstall apps on your home screen or in your app drawer. To do it, simply long-press the app and drag the app icon towards the ‘Remove’ or ‘Uninstall’ option at the top of the screen.

So here's some cool features of Android Marshmallow 6.0 on Viral Techs :)

WhatsApp fails at protecting user data: Report
WhatsApp failed to compete with other tech companies and lagged behind last when it comes to protecting user data from government requests, according to Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).
whatsapp-logo
The report titled “Who Has Your Back” from the prominent privacy advocacy group revealed that WhatsApp had received just one out of five stars EFF ratings. WhatsApp doesn’t publish a transparency report detailing requests it has received from the government and dose not promise to provide users advance notice of government data requests, said the report. The messaging service also doesn’t offer a promise to users that they will receive advance notice about government data demands. Moving on, the report criticizes WhatsApp for failing to publish information on data retention polices or content removal requests, i.e. when accounts are shut down.
“We entrust countless intimate details about our personal life to digital service providers. Often it’s corporate policies, not legal safeguards, that are our best defense against government intrusion. Technology companies must have the strongest possible policies to protect privacy, and we’re impressed that this group of nine has stepped up and met our ambitious new standards.”
said EFF Activism Director Rainey Reitman.
In comparison tech companies like Yahoo, Apple and Adobe earned top marks (5 star rating) from EFF as they are doing a good job of providing users with transparency about their interactions with the government.
