Higher resolution images coming soon to Instagram
instagram logo
Instagram has become the defining social network of our generation when it comes to image sharing. The cultural relevance and popularity of the application was such that the social networking giant, Facebook, invested USD 1billion to acquire the service. Through all of this, the company has stuck to the somewhat antiquated low resolution images that it launched with. This is about to change.
Looking through the source URLs on Instagram pages indicates that the company is about to increase the resolution dramatically. Where uploads were stuck to an archaic 640px, you’ll now be looking at 1080px wide images. This means that your embeds are going to look a lot crisper and will pack a lot more detail. We’re still not sure if Instagram is planning to fix the issue with compression artifacts on Android devices but this alone is a step in the right direction. While Full HD Android devices have been around for a while, the emergence of an Apple iPhone packing a high resolution display seems to be the impetus here to increase the resolution. We expect Instagram to switch over to high resolution embeds soon enough as it appears that all uploads are now in the higher resolution and said images can be accessed via direct URLs.

Facebook’s Snapchatty New Photo Uploader Lets You Overlay Text And More

Your photos aren’t all that interesting. But Facebook’s going to help you jazz them up with its shiny new photo uploader, which is now available for most users on iOS and is testing on Android. It lets you add overlaid text in any color, instantly preview filters that you swipe across your photos, or paste Facebook’s stickers on top. Facebook offered more standard filters before and had tested photo stickers, but now they live with the fresh text option in the new enhancements tray.

    IMG_1164
Add overlaid text to Facebook photos with the new uploader
If putting text, swipeable filters, and re-sizable emoji on photos sounds familiar, it might be because that’s exactly what Snapchat does. Since Facebook’s failed acquisition bid, it’s watched Snapchat grow and grow. Its attempts to clone Snapchat as a whole, Poke and Slingshot, have failed. Meanwhile, Japanese messaging app Line has gotten big on the back of stickers. So Facebook’s simply trying to bake the best of everything else into its own.
    Update: Facebook tells me:
People want to be creative when they share experiences with their friends and family on Facebook. We are rolling out a new place to house all of Facebook’s photo-editing tools, making it even easier to add filters, stickers, or text to your photos.”
Those with the new Facebook uploader on iOS will see a vertical line swoop across their chosen photo, alerting them they can swipe to immediately adjust the shot with “Auto” color correction, “Vintage” sepia, bright “Spring”, golden “Summer”, orange “Fall”, muted “Winter”, and black-and-white “Snow” filters. The swiping feels satisfying and makes it quick compare adjacent filters, though a bit harder to choose between two that aren’t next to each other.
    IMG_1166
Facebook’s new filter interface lets you drag your finger across a photo to try different filters. Here I’m swiping from the muted Winter filter to the black-and-white Snow filter.
A flashing magic wand button in the bottom left corner of the photo opens the enhancement tray with tabs for filters, tags, text, cropping, and stickers. Users can tap through a more Instagram-style list of the filters, tag friends in the photos, or crop the image.
    Facebook Photo Stickers
The text button cribs the interface from Facebook’s Slingshot. You can type in text, pinch and drag to re-size and move it, and use a color slider to choose a hue. Annoyingly, though, you have to write the text and choose the color with your photo blurred in the background, rather than live on the photo itself like with Snapchat.
You can call this all stealing, but Facebook’s philosophy of delivering utility is basically, “if it’s good for you, it’s even better for our 1.4 billion users.”

Apple’s suppliers start working on iPhones with force touch technology

Apple first debuted the force touch technology with the Apple Watch and the new Macbook. A lot of rumours started circulating saying that Apple will use this technology in the upcoming iPhones as well. Now apparently Apple’s suppliers have started manufacturing the iPhones with Force Touch already.

Full scale production of the upcoming iPhones are expected to start sometime around next month. Force Touch basically senses the amount of force used when users press their touchscreen and the phone can access different functions based on that.

This feature will help Apple differentiate it better from its competitors, especially Samsung who now have stepped up their game by providing premium materials and an edge screen with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

Apple were able to achieve high volumes of sales thanks to the larger iPhone 6 Plus model especially in the Asian markets where customers prefer larger phones for their screen real estate. The designs of the upcoming iPhones; most probably the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will be similar in terms of design to the current iPhones.

BloombergBusiness states that apparently Apple was planning to add pressure-sensitive displays to their iPhones back in 2013 itself but haven’t been able to until now. We hope that the extra complexity of the manufacturing process doesn’t result in any delays.

Now use Messenger without a Facebook login
Now use Messenger without a Facebook login: Here’s why it means business
The Facebook Messenger is an all new product. Before that we had direct messages or Inbox, depending on how we like to call it. Now with Messenger a separate app that you need to install, it comes across like a WhatsApp clone. But that’s not what it’s meant to be.
Facebook boasts of over a billion downloads on devices. So does WhatsApp. Now even Messenger claims the billion downloads tag. So why would the world’s most successful social media network invest and own two instant messaging platforms?
    Messenger1BAndroidDownloads
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made an important statement at F8, “Facebook used to be this single blue app. Now it’s a family of apps.” The reason for this is the presence of business on Facebook! While there large audiences on Facebook, the future undoubtedly is mobile. And to stay relevant, Facebook would have to maintain its dominance in the mobile space. The opening up of Messenger enables Facebook to do much more than standard Facebook advertising.
    Messenger Connect with customers
On mobile devices, though, interaction is via apps! That’s where Facebook sees a growth opportunity with messaging. There is no shortage of competition in the business of messaging. San Francisco-based Zendesk is a software development company that offers a cloud-based customer service platform that enables businesses to handle ticketing, self service and customer support features. What’s significant is that Zendesk is now a partner with Messenger. With this, a business that usually offers chat support could now just replace it with the Messenger application.
    Messenger offer support
So the next time you are ordering a product from an ecommerce site, you could follow up with your Facebook or Messenger credentials instead of entering your details again on a form.
    Messenger send messages appreciate
Apart from WhatsApp, there are dozens of apps that enable person to person as well as group instant messaging across mobile platforms. What differentiates them is the presence of brands on Facebook. Since WhatsApp isn’t the ideal way for brands to engage with customers, Facebook believes Messenger fills that gap.

    OnePlus Cardboard. Image: OnePlus
Talking on the VR launch of the OnePlus 2, Pei said, “When we thought about doing this launch in VR, we wanted to make sure the viewing experience was simple and straightforward. We love the existing cardboard VR headsets, but we saw some room for improvement, and decided to design our own custom headsets. We spent a lot of time at the drawing board tweaking them until they were perfect. Our version is tailored perfectly to the One, as well as fast and easy to assemble. We didn’t cut any corners on production, and we’re definitely losing money on this. But, we want to share them with everyone. For an even closer look, be sure to check out our OnePlus Cardboard page.”
Announcing the launch, Pei said, “We can’t wait to launch the OnePlus 2 with all of you, together, on July 27th. Check back in soon for more details on how to get your very own OnePlus Cardboard. We’ll see you at the launch!”
OnePlus also has a webpage for the Cardboard VR headset. You can read more about the VR headset and even get one for yourself for free

    hangouts_billion_downloads
Google Hangouts joins the club of apps that has crosses 1 Billion downloads on the Play Store.

It is a bit surprising to see that Google’s own messaging app managed to reach the milestone only after Whatsapp and Messenger apps from Facebook crossed the 1 Billion mark.

This app got billion installations it doesn't mean a billion users, it means one billion different Android devices have downloaded the app once. The number of updates and re-installations don’t count.

Hangouts is due for a major upgrade to version 4.0 sometime in the near future. No, we don't know when that will be. According to Android Rank, the next Google app in line at the moment is Street View, though that may be overtaken by Chrome before long.
